The hernia specialists at Klinik Donaustadt have expanded the treatment options for particularly large and complex incisional hernias by using state-of-the-art technologies and specialised surgical techniques. This success underscores Klinik Donaustadt’s pioneering role in the field of hernia surgery.
“The gap in the abdominal wall was so large that we would have had to open the entire abdomen as part of major surgery,” explains Dr Viktor Frieders-Justin. “That involves certain risks, a longer hospital stay and significant pain,” adds Dr Benjamin Glaser. However, the two hernia specialists at Klinik Donaustadt were the first within the Vienna Health Network to combine two methods that enable a minimally invasive procedure for a hernia of this size.
“First, we injected Botox into the lateral abdominal wall muscles. This makes the abdominal wall softer and easier to close. We were then able to use the most advanced surgical technique, namely robot-assisted surgery,” says Dr Benjamin Glaser. The advantages of a procedure using the Da Vinci surgical robot: the smaller incisions massively reduce the risk of wound infection, patients have less pain and recover faster.
